I work for NARAL because I believe that everyone has the right to choose what is best for their own bodies. The government should not force its own opinions onto any of its citizens’ bodies. This situation is especially relevant because the disenfranchisement of reproductive rights disproportionately affects women, racial minorities, and the impoverished, groups that have been historically oppressed in other ways.

I also believe that when there is more accurate informatioFotolia_61034637_XS.jpgn circulating in the mainstream about birth control choices, people will be better able to tailor their birth control to their needs. This will decrease the amount of unplanned pregnancies and decrease STI contraction rates.

In short, I believe that the world will only be a better place if people are able to make informed decisions about their reproductive health, a platform that I feel NARAL stands for.

I work for NARAL because I wanted to join an intimate community that acted on their beliefs so that my college development could be shaped by such an intelligent and compassionate network. Our club, Students for Reproductive Rights, is an informative club that works with the campus and Northfield community to deliver accurate information, supportive student networks and productive activism. This club is so important to the school because it works with school administration, local clinics, reliable women’s services and national organizations to meet social, logistical and medical needs on campus and the surrounding area. This club is so important to me because I have learned how to be an educated lobbyist, a caring clinic volunteer, an organized manager and an effective co-leader while exposing a Crisis Pregnancy Center, lobbying at the State and National capitals, networking with successful alums, and caring for new students

NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota believes in the power of the student voice! We recognize the need to train new pro-choice leaders and we’ve developed a Student Organizing program that reflects that.

NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s Student Organizing program hires interns and works with pro-choice students at fourteen colleges throughout the state to educate and activate students on campus. Whether we’re talking about the availability of emergency contraception at your school, sex education, or deceptive crisis pregnancy centers advertising at your school, you can count on our student organizers being able to keep you informed.

The anti-choice forces are organizing at every level of government, in our streets, in front of clinics and in our schools! Their efforts affect women at every age, but much of their work focuses on college-aged women.

That’s why the pro-choice movement needs students to educate and organize on their campuses. Through campus organizing, you are helping to protect the right to choose and building the newest generation of the pro-choice movement. If you are interested in learning more about what’s going on at your campus, please feel free to contact your local campus rep by e-mail.

For a little perspective, we’ve asked all of our campus reps why they chose to continue the work NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota started on campuses. Throughout this series, you will get a better understanding of why this position is vital to our students and their communities.
