The 2017-18 legislative biennium featured nearly a dozen bills that sought to scale back or virtually eliminate access to abortion in Minnesota. Three of these passed both chambers of the legislature, but were vetoed by Governor Mark Dayton.

In the 2018 election, the stakes for reproductive rights in Minnesota are enormously high. Anti-choice legislators have already committed to introducing a so-called “heartbeat ban” in 2019. This bill mirrors a recent law in Iowa that would ban abortion as early as six weeks — before most women even realize they are pregnant. We need to elect policy makers who will defend reproductive freedom in Minnesota.

NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota is proud to endorse the following legislators. They not only fought back against abortion bans and attacks on family planning, but also authored or co-authored proactive legislation to expand access to contraception, protect the doctor-patient relationship, and keep patients and clinic staff safe.  It’s up to us to re-elect them, along with new pro-choice legislators who will ensure accessible, safe and equitable reproductive health care for every Minnesotan.

The NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota endorsement is open to any candidates who share our vision that all Minnesotans should have access to the full range of reproductive health options, including contraception, abortion, and the ability to raise healthy children.  Candidates must submit a questionnaire that covers a range of reproductive rights policy to be considered for endorsement.  Stay tuned for more legislative endorsements throughout the summer.
