State based affiliates like us have always been independent organizations dedicated to protecting and advancing reproductive freedom in our states — because we know that not every state has the same needs.
This independence has allowed us to set our own legislative agendas, endorse our choice of abortion-out-loud candidates, lobby aggressively at the Capitol, and run the programming Minnesotans rely on, such as our clinic escort and campus organizer programs. It’s also allowed us to work in tandem with other state affiliates and National in sharing of wisdom, resources, and power.
Unfortunately, NARAL Pro-Choice America has decided to disaffiliate local groups in a power grab without consideration for the harmful impact it could have on access to abortion in the Upper Midwest and other parts of the country where access is even more restricted.
To cut off state level work in favor of a centralized DC-based structure is short sighted and dangerous, particularly with the Supreme Court poised to gut and overturn Roe v. Wade. The reality is that a national organization in Washington DC cannot replace the decadeslong, deeply established relationships our local organization has with progressive partners, in our communities, and at the State Capitol.
“Leaving our affiliation with NARAL Pro-Choice America (NPCA) behind could actually be a very exciting opportunity to get back to our roots as an organization – our grassroots!” said Maggie Meyer, Executive Director. “In addition to the harmful and deceptive practices used in the disaffiliation planning process, we simply don’t agree with the direction that NPCA is moving in. Their plan focuses on where they can make wins, not how they protect and advance access to reproductive health care. The truth is, in many states, including Minnesota and much of the Midwest, defensive work is more urgent than ever. We’re going to continue to engage our 100,000+ members, continue doing the hard work of expanding our movement to represent all people who need pregnancy and parenting care, and keep defending our rights in this state for many years to come.”
We have been the boots on the ground for over 50 years, leading Minnesota to be the island of abortion access in the Upper Midwest, and we’re ready for 50 more.
