Organization Overview

NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota is a 501(c)(4) non-profit lobbying organization with a mission to develop and sustain a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee Minnesotans the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing safe, legal abortion. NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota has a strong presence at the Capitol, drafting proactive legislation, testifying in committee, and lobbying individual legislators. As part of its work, NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota operates a state political action committee, which conducts direct electoral work with and for pro-choice candidates. NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota also operates a field canvass and a phone canvass, which are active year-round to build and organize membership across the state.

The NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, is run in conjunction with NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota and conducts public education, research, and outreach intended to increase public awareness of reproductive health care issues and access to care. Two of the Foundation’s major programs include the Campus Organizing Program, with student representatives on seven college campuses across the state, and the Volunteer Clinic Escort Program.

NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota has about five full-time office staff members, twelve full and part-time field and phone canvassers, seven student representatives, and between two and five interns. NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota is overseen by a 501(c)(4) board of directors and 501(c)(3) board of directors, which operate collaboratively and are collectively made up of approximately twenty volunteer members.

NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota is an affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota and the NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota Foundation. This includes overseeing staff and providing leadership on organizational administration, programs, and expansion, as well as execution of the organization’s mission. This role requires fundraising, grassroots organizing, and operational expertise and familiarity with the political process, as well as a deep commitment to NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s mission.

Position Description

1) Organization Mission and Strategy: Works with board and staff to ensure that the organization’s mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.

- Responsible for implementation of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s programs, including student organizing, clinic escorting, membership activism, and field and phone canvassing.
- Responsible for identifying pro-choice champions in the Minnesota legislature and collaborating with them to pass pro-choice legislation. Responsible for leading or coordinating lobbying activities and election organizing.
- Responsible for pursuing the organization’s strategic plan to ensure that NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota can successfully fulfill its mission into the future, including identifying opportunities for program growth and partnerships that enhance the organization’s ability to pursue and complete its work.
- Responsible for the enhancement of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s public profile by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with donors, members, elected officials, target audiences, and other like-minded organizations.
- Responsible for maintaining communications that deepen connections with donors, members, partners, pro-choice candidates and elected officials, and the pro-choice public.

2) Financial Performance and Viability: Works with board and staff to develop and manage resources to ensure the financial health of the organization.

- Responsible for the fiscal integrity of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota, to include:
- submitting proposed annual budgets and monthly financial statements to the Board for the 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities,
- executing sound financial oversight and compliance with audit requirements,
- completing required state and federal reports, tax payments, and other mandated financial documents.
- Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates spending within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintains a positive fiscal position across the organization.
- Responsible for fundraising and developing other financial resources necessary to support NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s operations and mission, with a focus on major gifts. Pursue and capitalize on new revenue and fundraising opportunities to support existing program operations and achieve growth targets.

3) Organization Operations: Works with the board to oversee and properly utilize resources to ensure that the organization’s operations are consistent with and in furtherance of the mission.

- Responsible for effective administration of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s operations.
- Responsible for the hiring, development, and retention of high-performing, qualified staff.
- Responsible for signing and ensuring compliance with all contracts and other instruments made and entered into on behalf of the organization.
- Responsible for building and growing effective systems to track organizational progress and regularly evaluate areas for improvement and successes, as well as communicating successes to NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s constituents.
- Responsible for adhering to all standards of affiliation with NARAL Pro-Choice America.

4) Board Governance: Works with the Board of Directors to facilitate appropriate organizational oversight and to fulfill NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s mission.

- Responsible for leading NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission and is aligned with the organization’s strategic plan, as identified by the Board of Directors.
- Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to keep apprised of organizational operations, make informed decisions, carry out its fiduciary duties to the organization, and otherwise function appropriately.

Summary of Job Duties
1. Plan and execute on an annual budget; complete necessary financial reporting on a timely basis.
2. Establish and adhere to employment and administrative policies and procedures for all organizational operations.
3. Supervise and collaborate with organization’s staff and contractors. Maintain healthy staffing levels by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
4. Direct and oversee all organizational operations, including political and programmatic work, fundraising efforts, and marketing and communications.
5. Serve as NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents and donors, the media, and the public.
6. Establish and maintain relationships with organizations and coalitions throughout the state and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s mission.
7. Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors, including to seek the Board’s involvement in policy decisions and fundraising.
8. Conduct strategic planning and implementation.
9. Ensure NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota complies with all standards of affiliation with NARAL Pro-Choice America and maintains appropriate relationships with NARAL Pro-Choice America and other affiliate organizations.
10. Provide support for Board and committee meetings.
11. Review contracts for service and prepare for Board approval.
12. Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience
- Five or more years of nonprofit management experience with demonstrated success in growing an organization
- Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities; experience in fostering a culture of diversity in our brand, members and staff
- Transparent and high-integrity leadership
- Solid budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making, and reporting
- Strong organizational capabilities including strategic planning, delegation, program development, and task facilitation
- Knowledge of effective marketing and storytelling strategies to reach a broad and diverse audience
- Ability to develop and convey a vision of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s strategic future to staff, board, volunteers, and donors
- Knowledge of and demonstrated success with development and implementation of fundraising strategies, as well as management of donor relations unique to the nonprofit, human-services sector
- Skills to collaborate with and motivate board members and other volunteers
- Ability to build and maintain partnerships with stakeholders
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking ability
- Ability to interface with and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups, including major donors
- Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff
- Ability to travel as necessary to raise funds, resources, and awareness for the organization

Field Canvasser

We're looking for part time and full time canvassers to apply for our Field Canvasser position. Applicants should be comfortable representing a pro-choice organization and have a basic understanding of applied feminism and progressive platforms. Phone Canvasser

We are hiring phone canvassers for our year round campaign to protect and defend a woman’s right to choose in the state of Minnesota. Our phone canvass calls our members to educate them on the legislation affecting choice across Minnesota and invest in the movement. We have a welcoming and positive work environment. We are looking for someone with fundraising/political experience, although we can train. A strong commitment to reproductive rights and justice is a must. Campus Representative

NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota believes in the power of the student voice. Our Student Organizing program developed as we recognized the need to train the next generation of pro-choice leaders.

NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota's Student Organizing program hires interns and works with pro-choice students at five colleges throughout the state to educate and activate students on campus. Whether we’re fighting for increased access to emergency contraception, birth control and sex education, exposing deceptive crisis pregnancy centers, or fighting for abortion rights in Minnesota, our Student Organizers are at the forefront of the on-campus fight for reproductive freedom.
