Official Statement: Pro-Choice Minnesota Responds to Iowa Abortion Ban

[Minneapolis, Minnesota] - Pro-Choice Minnesota, a leading advocate in the state of Minnesota for reproductive freedom and access to safe and legal abortion, strongly condemns the recent attempt to restrict reproductive healthcare choices in Iowa.
The recent ruling by an Iowa judge to temporarily block the implementation of the six-week abortion ban is a step in the right direction. It provides a crucial reprieve for women in Iowa who deserve the right to make decisions about their own bodies and futures. However, this ruling also highlights the continued attacks on reproductive freedom that threaten the rights of people with the capacity to become pregnant across the nation.
“Senate File 234 would have effectively banned abortion after just six weeks of pregnancy - before most people know they’re pregnant,” said Maggie Meyer, Executive Director. “We stand in solidarity with the individuals and organizations fighting against this harmful legislation. This extremely restrictive measure not only undermines pregnant people's rights but also disregards medical realities, as many people may not even realize they are pregnant at such an early stage. We need comprehensive reproductive health care that respects our autonomy and ensures access to safe and legal abortion services - no matter the timing during a person’s pregnancy - as that decision must be made by a person and their health care provider. We stand against any attempts to erode these fundamental rights, which are crucial to the overall health and well-being of individuals.”
As we witness these attacks on reproductive freedom, it is vital that we come together, across state lines, to protect and expand access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare. We call upon lawmakers to reject legislation that jeopardizes reproductive rights, and instead, focus on initiatives that enhance healthcare access, education, and support for all.
